Earlier that morning Leslie had received an urgent phone call explaining to her about a dog left in an abandoned house. Leslie would never understand the human urge to uproot them self, leaving their pets behind, heartbroken and forced to fend for themselves. It physically made Leslie sick to her stomach every time she received a phone call. The animals left behind were never ungrateful pets, but rather a creature who longed to find someone to be loyal to. They craved the sensation of a loving companion.
Leslie pulled into the neighborhood, observing the fact that the houses looked far from run down. Clearly the individual, who lived here last, was not suffering from a finical burden. She parked her car in the driveway, parking directly behind a gray Honda civic. Leslie greeted the current landlord of the property, exchanging a few greetings, none of which were important to her. Leslie was not concerned with this lady. Her mind was presently focused on taking possession of the abandoned dog and getting it the immediate help that he needed.
“How long has the dog been trapped inside?” Leslie bolded asked the woman.
“A few weeks, I wasn’t even aware the man moved away. It wasn’t until the neighbors complained about a dog howling consitantly inside the home. I called a few times to give him a warning and finally came to give a face to face warning. And yea, the rest is given…” The women dropped her last few words. Leslie sensed a bit of guilt in her voice. Almost as if she blamed herself for the dogs unhealthy state of being.
“Have you seen the dog?” Leslie questioned.
“No, I sent my husband inside after I stopped by. He said the dog is thin. His owner probably never even feed him before he ditched town.”
Leslie quickly understood that this woman’s “guilt” actually was fear. What could have happened to her to make her so terrified of dogs?
She opened the door and let Leslie inside the home. Immediately Leslie took charge and entered the house while the woman held back, standing on the porch with the front door wide open. “I’ll, ugh, wait outside” she mumbled.
Leslie rolled her eyes to the woman before entering the kitchen and spotting the dog in need. He sat in the corner, staring at Leslie unsure if he should trust her. Leslie held her hand out, and speaking in a gentle voice, “It’s okay, I won’t hurt you”. The dog sniffed her hand, licked it, and began to wag his tail in friendship. “Come on boy,” Leslie said after a few pats and exchanged kisses. “Let’s take you to a new home”.
The dog followed Leslie out of the house, and easily got inside his travel cage. The dog looked at Leslie and whined as he asked for reassurance that nothing bad would happen to him. Leslie smiled at the dog giving him the confidence that he needed. Humans and dogs share a special bond, an unspoken language of understanding. This mutt knew he was in good hands, and understood he wasn’t going to be abandoned again.
